I can no longer do so many of the things that I used to enjoy and had to give up working. On the outside I look okay, but I feel unwell most of the time, ache all over, my lungs hurt, my breathing is wheezy and I have no energy. Everything is an effort. It has taken so much over the years, but I’ve learned to focus on the things I can do and celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. About 10 yrs ago I decided to seek a second opinion and was referred to the respiratory dept at Liverpool Heart&Chest Hospital, best move I ever made, my amazing consultant there has managed to keep me on a fairly even keel , no cavities, no aspergilloma . He is at the top of his game and I thank him so much for his support via telephone consultations during shielding and lockdown. Stay Strong everyone - Aspergillus is a horrible little swine and we have to organize our lives around it - avoiding many outings that could compromise our health, the medications that keep us ticking over have so many undesirable side effects, we get very tired some days ...... but hey , we are still here !! I live in Australia. In 2020, I had my third bout of ABPA in 6 years. Although I had to stay isolated for many months to avoid catching , colds, flus or COVID because of a very low immunity, I didn’t have to go to hospital this time. I have a fantastic GP who uses regular blood tests and CT scans to monitor my progress on antifungal medication and steroids. I hate the side effects of these medications, but after 13 months on them this time, I am nearly better. I know that I will never be free of this allergy but I can live with it and enjoy many activities. My favourite pastime is gardening; however, I now have to wear protective clothing including a mask when I do tend to my plants. I have written my story before and had an article published in the Breathe magazine so I won't bore you with my whole story again. Instead I thought I would offer hope, hope in the form of a recovery perhaps. After many long years of fighting to stay alive with this disease, there is sunshine on the horizon. My Aspergillosis is dormant, my breathing is good (aside from the off asthma bout) and I am off antifungals. My IGE's have lowered significantly and I have been discharged from the Aspergillosis Clinic in Manchester, though with a request that I seek a referral back to them if the Fun Guy plays me up again. So after so 20 years, I can, for the moment say I am Aspergillus free. There is hope for all of us. The shock of hearing ‘fungal’ & “it’s gone & won’t come back “ still rings in my ears on bad days. I have ABPA allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, it hasn’t gone & it certainly can always cause symptoms. The symptoms can be a wheeze & cough & potentially as before plugs of mucous big enough to block airways & cause lung collapse.
